OpenAI outage: ChatGPT went down and people lost their sh*t
Students grappled with the grim reality of having to write essays and do exam revision the old-school way after an OpenAI horror outage.
ChatGPT crashed late on Thursday evening after suffering a mysterious outage as millions of people used it to prepare for their finals.
OpenAI confirmed the outage had hit Sora, ChatGPT and its APIs. It wrote: "We have reports of API calls returning errors, and difficulties logging in to platform.openai.com and ChatGPT. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix."
The AI firm later added: "ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we've recovered."
The website Down Detector showed a huge spike in reports of a ChatGPT outage.
Even Elon Musk noticed the problems and wrote: "ChatGPT is currently having a total global outage."
It has been speculated that the integration of ChatGPT into Apple's iOS 18.2 may be linked the outage - but this has not been confirmed and we do not yet know OpenAI crumbled.
The LLM is now integrated into Writing Tools and Siri, enabling users to "tap into ChatGPT’s expertise without having to switch between apps, helping them get things done faster and easier than ever before."
On X, people struggled to cope with the grim reality of having to do homework or assignments manually rather than using an LLM.
"Bruh, ChatGPT is down, and I’m trying to do my final," one person wrote.
"ChatGPT is down like bitch i was using that for my finals rn fml," another wailed.
"I’m praying for every single one of y’all because I know this had to be done on purpose! During finals week!?!" a concerned soul wrote.
Another student who was clearly concerned with the impact the outage might have on their academic excellence roared: "IM MAD AS FUCKK WHY IS CHATGPT DOWN I NEED TO DO MY ENGLISH Home work."
Other comments were more measured.
An X user said: "PLEASE don't tell me I have to use my brain again. This is exhausting."
We've left the messages unedited to avoid diluting their impact.
